Coach Chaid’s Physical Education Program
2026–2027 School Year
Welcome to Physical Education
Welcome to Physical Education! My goal is to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where every student can develop the skills, confidence, and healthy habits needed to enjoy physical activity for a lifetime.
Physical Education is about much more than sports. Throughout the year, students will develop movement skills while also learning teamwork, leadership, communication, perseverance, sportsmanship, and responsible decision-making.
Every student can be successful in PE through effort, participation, respect, and a willingness to learn.
— Coach Chaid

Coach Chaid’s Five Rules of PE
These expectations help students remain safe, active, and respectful during every class.
1. Don’t Interrupt
Listen respectfully when the teacher or another student is speaking.
2. Follow Instructions
Listen carefully and begin activities promptly.
3. Stay on Your Feet
Students should remain in control of their bodies and avoid unsafe sliding, diving, or rough play.
4. Wear Sneakers
Proper athletic footwear helps students move safely and participate fully.
5. Participate 100%
Students are expected to remain engaged, give their best effort, and maintain a positive attitude.
All school rules continue to apply during Physical Education. Serious safety or behavior incidents may result in immediate consequences.
Participation and Assessment
Students are evaluated based on effort, participation, skill development, responsibility, and personal growth—not simply on athletic ability.
Skill Development
Students demonstrate proper movement and sport-specific skill cues while working to improve their control, accuracy, and overall performance.
3 — Models Expectations: Consistently demonstrates the skill cues with control and strong effort
2 — Meets Expectations: Demonstrates most skill cues with moderate effort and control
1 — Needs Improvement: Has difficulty demonstrating basic skill cues or gives minimal effort
Participation and Responsibility
Students are expected to:
Follow directions
Remain actively engaged
Demonstrate respectful behavior
Use equipment properly
Give consistent effort
Support classmates
Follow safety expectations
Participation is monitored using Coach Chaid’s classroom expectations and three-strike system.
Sportsmanship and Character
Students are expected to demonstrate:
Respect
Honesty
Responsibility
Teamwork
Leadership
Encouragement
Inclusion
Positive communication
Winning is never more important than safety, effort, honesty, and respect.
Students will learn how to acknowledge the strengths of others, contribute positively to groups, resolve disagreements, and include classmates of different abilities and experience levels. These expectations align with the social and personal development standards embedded throughout the PE curriculum.
What Students Should Wear
Students should arrive prepared to participate in clothing and footwear that allow them to move freely and safely.
Recommended
Closed-toe athletic shoes
Comfortable clothing suitable for movement
Weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor activities
A water bottle when permitted
Not Recommended for PE
Sandals
Flip-flops
Crocs
Open-toed shoes
Shoes without secure backs
Clothing that significantly restricts movement
Students without appropriate footwear may be given a modified activity for safety reasons.
Safety Expectations
Student safety is always the highest priority.
Students are expected to:
Stop immediately when the signal is given
Listen carefully during instructions
Remain within activity boundaries
Use equipment only as directed
Keep hands, feet, and objects under control
Respect personal space
Avoid rough or reckless play
Report injuries immediately
Inform Coach Chaid about unsafe equipment or conditions
Attendance, Injuries, and Medical Needs
Physical Education is a participation based class where students learn through movement and activity.
Students who are present but temporarily unable to participate may receive an appropriate modified activity or alternate assignment. The model syllabus requires documentation for extended limitations and provides alternative work for students who cannot fully participate.
Parents and guardians should communicate any:
Injuries
Medical restrictions
Required accommodations
Activity limitations
Health concerns that could affect participation
A doctor’s note may be requested when a student is unable to participate for an extended period.
FitnessGram and Personal Fitness
Students will participate in California FitnessGram activities during the school year.
FitnessGram helps students:
Learn about health-related fitness
Assess personal fitness levels
Set realistic goals
Recognize areas of strength
Identify opportunities for improvement
Track progress over time
Fitness results are intended to encourage growth and healthy habits rather than competition between students. The aligned standards include personal fitness assessment, goal setting, heart-rate awareness, and long-term physical activity planning.
Standards Based Instruction
The Physical Education program supports students in becoming physically literate by helping them:
Develop a variety of motor skills
Apply knowledge of movement and fitness concepts
Develop social skills through movement
Develop personal skills and recognize the benefits of physical activity
Each unit is connected to grade-level California Physical Education standards. For example:
Soccer focuses on dribbling, trapping, kicking, open space, and teamwork
Basketball focuses on controlled dribbling, passing, catching, and movement
Jump rope focuses on rhythm, cardiovascular activity, flexibility, and practice
Capture the Flag focuses on spatial awareness, strategy, communication, and cooperation
Frisbee focuses on throwing accuracy, catching, controlled movement, and continuous activity
Family Communication
Communication between school and home is encouraged.
Please reach out regarding:
Student participation
Injuries or health concerns
Required accommodations
Class expectations
Safety concerns
Questions about a unit or assessment
Email is the preferred method of communication, and every effort will be made to respond within one school day. This follows the communication approach used in the base syllabus.

Closing Message
Success in Physical Education is not measured by being the fastest, strongest, or most experienced. It is measured by giving your best effort, supporting others, learning from challenges, and improving every day.
Let’s have a safe, active, and successful year.
